Solar panels come in many shapes and
sizes. The commercial panels tend to be somewhat expensive and can be problematic. Most solar panels have an output of direct current (DC) and at a low voltage. To make the voltage useable for the home you need to convert the DC voltage to 120 volts AC. There are as many types of converters as there are solar panels. You will need to determine how much current you intend to generate to purchase the best converter possible. One of the big issues with solar panels is the number of them it takes to build a usable current. The two shown at the right produce a maximum of 900 watts. 900 watts will power 9 100 watt light bulbs which would be full load. Converters such as these do not work well for motors or other equipment which draw a large amount of current at start up. These motors are in every refrigerator and furnace. |

| The photo to the right shows a realistic size of solar panels array needed to produce the kind of energy required for a home. Further the size of the voltage converter has to increase along with the number of panels required. Further there is a need for a large battery rack to store the power generated during the day. |
